TITRA LUBE TBN :

Quantitative test kits to determine Total Base Number values between 0 to 20 in all types of Engine Lubricating Oils.

TITRA LUBE TBN

CONTENTS

Each kit comprises of:

  1. TUBE 1 - Plastic tube with white dispensing cap containing a white dot ampoule and a black dot ampoule

  2. TUBE 2 - Plastic test tube with white cap containing 7 ml of aqueous buffer solution and a red-orange ampoule

  3. A polypropylene sampling syringe and a tissue-wipe.

  4. A sealed plastic syringe with break-off tip containing titrating solution

  5. A plastic syringe plunger rod

  6. A plastic filtration funnel

Directions

SAMPLE INTRODUCTION

  1. Remove Tube #1 (black cap) and the sampling syringe from the kit box and place Tube #1 into a holder in front of the box.

  2. Remove the black cap from the test tube.

  3. Work the plunger of the syringe a few times to ensure it slides easily.

  4. Place the tip of the syringe into a well mixed oil sample to be tested.

  5. Pull back the plunger of the syringe slowly until it reached the stop, making sure the sample contains no air bubbles.

  6. Remove the syringe from the sample container and wipe away excess oil off the tip with enclosed tissue.

  7. Dispense the oil sample into Tube #1 and dispose of the sampling syringe.

REACTION

  1. Replace the black cap on the tube tightly.

  2. Break the bottom colourless white dot ampoule into the test tube and shake well for 15 seconds.

  3. Break the top colourless, black dot ampoule and shake vigorously for 30 seconds.

EXTRACTION

  1. Remove the caps from both test tubes and pour the clear buffer solution from Tube #2 (white cap) to Tube #1 (black dispensing cap).

  2. Replace the black cap tightly on Tube #1 and shake vigorously for 30 seconds.

  3. Vent the tube by partially unscrewing the dispensing cap one-half turn and re-tighten the cap securely.

  4. Stand the tube upside down on its cap and allow the phases to separate for a full three minutes.

ANALYSIS

  1. Place the plastic filtration funnel into Tube #2.

  2. Position Tube #1 over the funnel and, keeping the black cap tube vertical, open the nozzle on the dispenser cap.

  3. Be sure to point the nozzle away from the operator, while opening it, and check the nozzle is fully open before dispersing the clear solution.

  4. Dispense 5 ml of the clear solution into Tube #2 (5 ml line) by squeezing the sides of Tube #1.

  5. Do not allow any oil to pass through the filter into the test tube. If the tube must be squeezed twice to dispense enough solution, make sure to let the air in slowly, so that the oil and water layers are not mixed.

  6. Close the nozzle on the dispensing cap on Tube #1 and remove the filter funnel on Tube #2.

  7. Open the foiled pouch containing the plastic syringe by tearing across the notched edges.

  8. Place the plunger rod into the titrating syringe and press until it clicks into its place.

  9. Break off (do not pull off) the tip on the titrating syringe.

  10. Place the syringe into Tube #2 and tighten the cap.

  11. Break the orange-red ampoules by squeezing the sides of the tube and shake vigorously for 5 seconds. Do not zero the plunger prior to analysing the sample.

  12. While shaking the tube, slowly depress the syringe plunger and look for colour change.

  13. Stop depressing the plunger as soon as the solution changes from magenta to yellow.

RESULTS

  1. Read the TBN number off the titration syringe right at the tip of the black plunger.
